    Kowloon - Hong Kong

    Kowloon, which in chinese means Nine Dragons is located at the northern part of Hong Kong Island. This peninsular here is one of the busiest places in the whole of Hong Kong. It is the most densely populated place on the planet as known to many. Names like Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok are among the household names often associated with this district.


    Apart from the cross-harbour buses and trains from Hong Kong Islad, one can come to Kowloon viathe Star Ferry from Central directly to Tsim Sha Tsui.

    Kowloon is very famous for its shopping facilities. Where one is concerned, Kowloon offers the best places to shop for bargains and cheap goods. While districts like Hong Kong Island are infested with branded goods and designer labels, Kowloon will always be the place for those who would want to buy cheap stuff.

    Like any other parts of Hong Kong, shopping at markets are a norm. One can do shopping to enjoying local foods at these markets. The Night Market is one that can be found in Kowloon. Opened only in the evening to wee hours of the morning, here is where one can find almost anything in the few streets that make up the market.

    The Flower Market offers flora and fauna, not only for purchase but provides a spectacular view as well.

    And then there is Ladies’ Street, Loi Yan Kai as it is known, has since put its mark in the world’s shopping directory. This outdoor market is where as one would say all the world’s brands are centralized. This however are fake goods which are very closely imitated with the genuine ones. At this junction, one can also buy other things like electronics and sports products as well. It is said that any one who loves shopping will know and love Ladies’ Street.


    Also at Temple Street is one of the busiest chinatown styled markets. Food is available via the hawkers there while there are many hundreds more of stalls selling souvenirs and imitation goods as well.


    For the upper market, one can go around Harbour City Shopping Mall located in Tsim Sha Tsui. It is visible as you embark from the Star Ferry as it is just next to the pier, while on Nathan Road, there are a wide range of electronic goods to choose from. The Langham Place in Mong Kok is another well recommended mall because it includes a Hotel, an office block and a 15 storey of shops. This fusion of entertainment outlets are one of the preferred place due to its nature of offering anything under the sky.


    Other places like Festival Walk and New Century Plaza are also recommended shopping malls for the shoppers.


    Over at Sham Shui Po there is the largest IT Mall in Hong Kong, the Golden Computer Centre. While Mong Kok is one of the most electrical centric areas in Hong Kong.


    Attractions in Kowloon
    As compared to Hong Kong Island, Kowloon has less attractions for the tourist as it is a more shopping focused district. But it cannot be discounted for its own attraction value like the Kowloon Waterfront which is a place for one to see the skylines of Hong Kong.

    A Symphony of Lights displays one of the best laser and sound shows in the world daily at 8pm in English on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and in cantonese on the remaining days.

    Other attractions are like The Kowloon Walled City Park, The Hong Kong Cultrural Centre and the Hong Kong Space Museum are worth visiting as well.

    Eating and Drinking
    To say the least, Kowloon is very well known for its food. While Hong Kong Island’s food is
    costlier, Kowloon is famous for cheaper food outlets.


    For a taste of authentic Chinese food, one can head up to Choi Lung Restaurant, where dim sum is served. at the Fa Yuen Street Complex, there are various stalls available where one can choose from fresh food to cooked food.


    There are various other food courts like in Dragon Centre, Chunking Mansons and Citysuper all provides a wide range of cuisines to choose from. For the more expensive restaurants, one can head out to Jade Palace and Yet Tung Heen located inside Eaton Hotel.


    Places for a great night out with drinks include Aqua which is a bar and western cuisine available. Also at Felix which is at the peak of Peninsula Hotel provides a great view and a place to unwind as well.


    Hong Kong Hotels and Accommodations
    As Kowloon is essentially a tourist district, various budget accommodations are available. Dragon Hostel and the Lee Garden Guest House located at Cameron Road are prime examples. A walk along other areas like the Mirador Mansions and Chung King Mansions will find many other budget inns available for backpackers and budget travelers alike.

    Higher range hotels are also available in Kowloon. The Salisbury YMCA although being part of YMCS is a mid range hotel facility accomodation. The Regal Kowloon Hotel and the Eaton Hotel as well are four star hotels and above.


    On a higher note, there are the elegantly designed posh hotels like The Langham Place Hotel located in Mongkok. This five star hotel is state of the art modern hotel which is similar to its sister hotel, the Langham Hotel Hong Kong located in Tsim Sha Tsui near the Victoria Harbour and TsimShatsui MTR station.


    The Peninusla Hong Kong and New World Renaissance are also upmarket accomodations that one can check out costing above HKD 700 and abover per night.
