Outlying Islands
Hong Kong Outlying Islands is a another district that form Hong Kong as a whole. Having named so to identify the 234 islands around this area, it identifies its own water-based lifestyle of Hong Kong. Known as Hong Kong’s hinterland, this is where fishing villages are abundantly mushroomed.
One would have to take note that as much as Outlying Islands are very much an interesting place to visit, it succumbs to natural weather threats like storms and typhoons which are very common in Hong Kong. Traveling in around the islands are also very inconvenient.
Places that strikes a note with visitors here would be Lamma and Cheung Chau.
Places of Interests
Lamma Island is the best place to visit on any day where tourists throng this island seemed to be increasing daily. At about Yung Shue Wan, there is a Lan Kwai Fong style area of pubs and bars that most tourists and young professionals come by for a night out.
Cheung Chau, on the other hand is a more traditional place to visit, offering the visitor a chance to look and experience the very fishing community and village of a typical village. Other popular spots include Po Toi, Tung Lung Chau and Soko Islands, all provide the tourist a great understanding of the very traditional lifestyle that still exist until the modern day.
Getting there.
To get to the islands, one definitely has to take the boat or ferries. From Central, one has to embark through the Outlying Islands Pier. New World First Ferry and Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry Company are prime operators for these services. The services include Cheung Chau which is available very half an hour, to Lamma Island would be available every 90 minutes, Tap Man Chau via the Ma Liu Shui Pier and to Soko Islands will require the visitor to go from Cheung Chau.
Once a the islands, as mentioned one would have to go by foot as there are not many cars in around the islands. This is made more difficult if one like to visit other islands where one can hire a small ferry also konwn as a Kaido.
At Cheung Chau, one can engage a walking tour guide that are provided from the local agents where one will be brought around to see the local attractions there. At Lamma island however, one would not want to miss the Yung Shue Wan, the expatriate lane of pubs and bars for travelers particularly. There is also a row of seafood restaurants in So Kwu Wan for the seafood lovers. One should also take note of Peng Chau which houses about 8 temples and provides a great view of neighboring islands from there.
The rest of the smaller islands provide their own trademark list of their own attractions. For instance one can go to Waglan Island to view the 1893 built lighthouse, the 250 years old temple at Tung Ping Chau, the Tin Hau Temple at Tap Mun and the rock forest at Soko Islands.
Local attractions here include the Cheung Chau Bun Festival held every May. One should also look for the peanut candies here available for purchase at Lamma Island.
Seafood
As Outlying islands are fundamentally a group of islands, it is common that seafood is famous around here. Mostly congregated around Cheung Chau and Lamma Island, one can go to spots like Peach Garden and Han Lok Yuen for a taste of the locally prepared fresh seafood.
The Silvermine Beach Hotel is a budget hotel located in the small town of Mui Wo. Warwick Hotel at Cheung Chau is another alternative, apart from these, one should be able to find a wide range of budget accommodations available.
