Hong Kong is the territory given to the British after the then Chinese Qing Dynasty lost the First Opium War, subsequently, the Second Opium War saw the Kowloon Peninsular given over to the British. After that, the New Territories followed suit all under a lease of 99 years. In the mid 1980s, the agreement was made by the British to hand Hong Kong back to China and the date was set for 1st July 1997. This, as agreed, took place and Hong Kong became effectively known as the Special Administrative Region of the Peoples Republic of China or SAR in short.
As much as been said, Hong Kong still enjoys its freedom as before and carries the slogan of ‘One Country, Two Systems’ which is unique in its own sense. Effectively ‘handed over’ to China, Hong Kong still very much maintains its own identity, its own currency, and its own administration.
Criticism has been made known by various parties over the years on how the country should be run and who should make decisions. Although in matters like foreign affairs and defence issues that are very much under the purview and guidance of China, there still are many who are opting for a more democratic country in these terms.
